(2) A quote from 7 Secrets of the Eucharist by Vinny Flynn:
The Holy Eucharist, continues Pope John Paul II, is “the greatest gift in the order of grace and of sacrament” that God has given us, and the Church has a special responsibility to protect and preserve its sacredness, especially as the sacrament of unity. Every priest who celebrates the Mass should remember that it is “not only he with his community,” but the whole Church that is praying. Thus,
the priest … cannot consider himself a “proprietor” who can make free use of the liturgical text and of the sacred rite as if it were his own property, in such a way as to stamp it with his own arbitrary personal style.
In Gift and Mystery, the pope’s reflection on his own 50 years as a priest, he returns to this theme. The priest, he explains, is the “steward of the mysteries of God… not the owner”:
The priest receives from Christ the treasures of salvation … to distribute them among the people to whom he is sent…. No one may consider himself the “owner” of these treasures; they are meant for all. But … the priest has the task of administering them.
