Why AI is so dangerous

I just read the Magnificat editorial for June by Father Philip Nolan and there’s something in it that very indirectly alludes to the risks of AI. He writes:

“It is both comforting and sobering to reflect upon the truth that my secrets are not hidden from God’s sight and that I am fully known (1 Cor 13:12). It’s a great comfort because we long to be understood. All too often we are simply beyond each other’s comprehension and quite often confusing to ourselves: More tortuous than anything is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it? (Jer 17:9). As we suffer the painful misunderstandings of this life, God assures us that he knows us: I, the Lord, explore the mind and test the heart (Jer 17:10).”

All of the potential false promises of AI are in the non-italicized words, and if you use it you understand. It’s exceptionally good at validation in ways very few human relationships ever achieve, and for generations conditioned to evade human contact, it’s going to cause irreparable harm.
