What’s on

Bermuda is just barely in the rearview mirror, but work travel has made it very difficult to unpack the specialness of that trip. We left some genuine rabbit holes on Somers Islands related to Crossways and Adolph Treidler. I’m working on a post related to the latter but still researching.

In the meantime, a weeklong work trip to Rio had us visiting Maracanã Stadium and Christ the Redeemer. The stadium tour was great, but it was this mosaic at the very end by Paulo Werneck that was a bit of a highlight. Werneck was a significant figure in Brazilian Modernism. The mosaic was installed in the 1950s and restored for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

We also visited Christ the Redeemer. The highlight on this little pilgrimage was seeing the Chapel of Our Lady of Aparecida (Capela de Nossa Senhora Aparecida). Our Lady of Aparecida is the Patroness of Brazil¹ and celebrated annually on October 12.

¹Proclaimed in 1930 by Pope Pius XI (February 6, 1922 – February 10, 1939).
